Canton Chinese on Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables has been open for over 40 (!!!) years.
It’s nostalgic in many ways.Chinese artworks hang on the walls and little Chinese ‘objects d’art’ are delicately placed at the front door checkout counter.Even the ceramic dishes which many foods are served on, are probably over 40 years old too.Solid plates for solid dishes.
This eatery offers a nice selection of appetizers and entrees.Their simple to read paper menu, (no stylish leather bond menus here) include 8 Fried Rice dishes, 8 Soup dishes (Wonton, Egg Drop, Hot & Sour}, 7 Noodle plates and an ample array of Mushu, Curry, Szechuan, Egg Foo Young and Sweet & Sour.
We both chose their ‘Lunch Combo’ where nothing on the Lunch Special exceeds $ 14.50.That includes 18 different varieties of Chinese favorites plus a Vegetable Lo Mein. Lunch comes with a side rice dish and soup. I counted more than 100 items to select from on their menu plus 8 desserts and 7 beverages, not including coffee, hot tea and plain water.
The place is ample with large front windows, several TV sets mounted on various walls, a Chinese inspired PEASANT atmosphere, background music and quick service.
The only thing missing from their paper menu was the address and telephone number. So here it is:
Canton Chinese (Coral Gables) is located at: 2614 Ponce de Leon Blvd.
