Fort de France                                                       Balata Basilica, replica of Paris Basilica           Theater Ruins destroyed by the volcano

The French Island of Martinique was not originally on our planned schedule.

However, St. Lucia, our original stop was undergoing construction after a difficult bout with Hurricane Irma and ships were unable to dock at the cruise terminal. Passengers were reimbursed their excursion payments.

Frankly, I was thrilled to visit Martinique’s alternative island excursions. Fort de France, the capital of the country, has a modern infrastructure, well maintained roads, an impressive airport, plenty of great shopping areas, delicious French restaurants and a heavenly rain forest.  Think of it as France under the tropics.

Tourists were able to visit, Le Carbet the famous landing site of Christopher Columbus in 1502, and then experience the volcanic ruins of Saint-Pierre. There are also Martinique’s rum distilleries, the Balata Gardens and a host of noteworthy sites to see. Oh and tourists get a break on goods purchased if they present their passports when buying French items. So worth visiting again.  It’s on my Bucket List.
